Moi Enomenga, head of Huaoroni People of Ecuador, Visits VSU Oct. 6-7

VALDOSTA – Valdosta State University welcomes Moi Enomenga, head of the Huaoroni people of Ecuador, to campus Oct. 6-7.

Enomenga works to preserve the native land and traditions of the Ecuadorian Amazon, while embracing the benefits ecotourism provides for the Huaoroni people.

Faculty, staff, students, alumni, retirees, and friends of the university will have several opportunities to hear Enomenga speak and to support his conservation efforts by purchasing bags and jewelry handmade by the Huaoroni people.

Interpreters will be provided at each of Enomenga’s speaking engagements.   

Thursday, Oct. 6

• 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. in West Hall Room 138
• 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Nevins Hall Room 2075
• 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. in Nevins Hall Room 1061
• 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in Psychology Building Auditorium 1024 — There will be a screening of “Embrace of the Serpent,” an award-winning film focused on the journey of a native tribe’s last member in the Amazon rainforest. Enomenga will speak about the Amazon following the film.

Friday, Oct. 7

• 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Valdosta High School Performing Arts Center
• 9 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. in West Hall Room 147
• 11 a.m. to noon in West Hall Room 138
• 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the University Center Theater

VSU is accepting donations of gently worn clothing for Enomenga to take back to the Huaoroni school. A collection box is located in front of West Hall Room 128, the Department of Modern and Classical Languages.

Enomenga’s visit is sponsored by VSU’s Department of Modern and Classical Languages; Department of Physics, Astronomy, and Geosciences; Women’s and Gender Studies Program; and Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.
