VALDOSTA — The Valdosta State University Student Recreation Center pool recently reopened after a four-month hiatus to unveil refurbishments, repairs, and the addition of the VSU spirit logo and colors.

“Students rank the pool as one of the top amenities to have in the Student Recreation Center,” said Shawn Phippen, director of Campus Recreation. “Students are not in class or studying all the time, and the pool is an excellent place to relax.

“Students use the pool for a variety of reasons. We have academic classes on swimming, water safety, and lifeguarding. They can get academic credit, learn skills, and use the pool for exercise.”

Swimming lessons are also available for an additional fee.

The Student Recreation Center plans to add some scuba experiences to the list of available courses for the pool this semester.

The Student Recreation Center staff also plans to bring back Canoe Battleship, one of its most popular programs. Teams of four, equipped with buckets and kickboards, get into their canoes. When the round starts, teams attempt to sink their opponents’ canoes, using buckets to scoop water into them. The last team standing wins. The students versus university officials game begins at 7p.m. on Feb. 2.

The Student Recreation Center pool is available to all fee-paying VSU students, faculty, staff, and community members who hold memberships to the VSU Student Recreation Center.
