The Office of Student Success & Retention offers free Supplemental Instruction, peer tutoring, and writing assistance to help you make the most of your academic experience. Whether you're preparing for an exam, mastering course concepts, or taking a writing assignment to the next level, academic support can help you build confidence, sharpen your skills, and keep moving toward graduation.

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a peer-assisted learning program designed to help students succeed in historically challenging courses.

SI provides regularly scheduled, collaborative study sessions where students review course concepts, compare notes, discuss readings, practice problem-solving, develop effective study strategies, and prepare for exams. By working together, students strengthen their understanding of course material while building the academic skills needed for long-term success.

Sessions are led by trained SI Leaders who previously excelled in the course. SI Leaders attend class lectures, take notes alongside students, and facilitate active learning by modeling effective study habits and guiding collaborative discussion rather than re-teaching course content.

Knack is Valdosta State University's free peer tutoring platform that connects students with trained peer tutors who have successfully completed the same courses.

Through Knack, students receive personalized one-on-one academic support to strengthen their understanding of course material, prepare for exams, improve study strategies, and build confidence. Tutoring is available both in person and online, making it easy to get help when and where you need it.

Getting Started with Knack

  1. Sign Valdosta's Knack website and use your MyVSU credentials
  2. Set your notification preferences.
  3. Search for your course or request help with a specific topic.
  4. Connect with a qualified peer tutor online or in person.

 

Our Writing Assistance program provides free one-on-one support for students at every stage of the writing process. Whether you're brainstorming ideas, organizing your thoughts, strengthening your argument, improving grammar, or polishing a final draft, our graduate writing consultants are here to help.

Writing Assistance is available for ENGL 1101, ENGL 1102, and writing assignments across undergraduate and graduate courses. Appointments are offered both in person and virtually, providing flexible support to fit your schedule.
