Letter from the Department Head
Welcome to VSU’s Computer Science Department. Computer science is an exciting and dynamic field. Currently, we are in a midst of an unprecedented advancement of technology and the job market for CS graduates is booming. This means that now is the best time to study computer science.
Our department has 9 faculty members all of whom have advanced degrees in CS and varied research interests. We offer two degree programs: Computer Science and Computer Information Systems and a minor in computer science. Please visit our Degree Programs page for further details.
In our CS and CIS degree programs, we offer a broad range of foundational as well as cutting edge computer science courses. Our graduates will learn at least six or seven programming languages by the time they graduate. The foundational courses gives our graduates a deep understanding of all the basic concepts of computer science. We also offer a variety of elective courses that our graduates take to gain insights into cutting edge topics like big data, cyber security, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, and mobile apps.
Our department fosters an engaging and active environment for our students where they get to participate in various activities outside the classroom. VSU’s ACM student chapter is very active and organizes various events for CS students. Our students participate in other activities like Hackathon (software design competition), ACM programming competition, and VSU’s Undergraduate Research Symposium which enables them to showcase their talent and creativity outside classroom.
We are very proud of the fact that our graduates have had great success after finishing their degrees at VSU. In recent years, our graduates have secured employment in major companies like Google, defense contractors like Booz Allen Hamilton, governmental agencies like National Security Agency (NSA), and US Air Force’s Cyber Operations as their first employment after finishing their degree at VSU. Some of our alumni have gone on to create their own companies. Many of our graduates also seek graduate degrees in selective graduate programs at prestigious universities.
Computer Science is one of the best majors to pursue right now, and our department offers two great programs that will enable a student to enter into this exciting field If you have further questions please contact us at cs@valdosta.edu or 229-253-4410.
