Southern Economics Association presents VSU's Dr. L. Wayne Plumly,Jr. with prestigious award

Valdosta State University's Dr. L. Wayne Plumly, Jr. has been presented with the prestigious Kenneth G. Elzinga Distinguished Teaching Award by the Board of Trustees of the Southern Economics Association. The winner of the award was announced at the 2004 meeting of the Southern Economics Association held on November 22, 2004 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Plumly, a professor in the Harley Langdale, Jr. College of Business Administration's Marketing & Economics Department, was cited for being ?an exemplary economics educator inside the classroom? at VSU, and in his local community.

Art Goldsmith, Chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Distinguished Teaching Awards Southern Economics Association, outlined the citation in a letter.

?He encourages students to enrich their understanding of economics by participating in service-learning and they have responded to his call by contributing over 30,000 hours of service.? Plumly serves as the Faculty Advisor for the VSU Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE). He has also produced a series of highly regarded instructional videos for primary and secondary school students that introduce them to the fundamental insights central to economics.

Plumly's citation also states, ?Professor Plumly has also promoted economic literacy across the state of Georgia by constructing effective materials for distance-learning of economics. His tireless effort to help students understand the how of a free enterprise system works has enriched the lives of countless students.?
