University Mourns Death of Student
VALDOSTA - Valdosta State University student Shannon Martin,
sophomore, died Thursday, September 13, 2007. The student was
admitted to South Georgia Medical Center on September 6, 2007 with
rare complications from a suspected virus. A highly contagious
bacterial infection, meningococcal meningitis, was ruled out. SGMC
officials have confirmed that no new cases have been identified in
Lowndes or surrounding counties.
VSU students held a candlelight memorial for Shannon on Friday,
September 14, 2007. More than 400 students and members of VSU
community were present to pay tribute.
“The University community is saddened by the death of Shannon
Martin and will continue to keep her family and friends in our
prayers and thoughts during this difficult time,” VSU President
Ronald M. Zaccari said.
