VSU Aims to Break Guinness World Record for Food Drive
VALDOSTA - Campus Dining Services at Valdosta State University
will aim to break the Guinness World Record for most nonperishable
food collected in a 24-hour period at the “Can Challenge” from 3-6
p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, on Palms Quad.
The Guiness World Record of 221,028.85 pounds is a lofty one, but
VSU’s Campus Dining, operated by Sodexho Campus Services, is eager
to help other Sodexho campuses claim collect the most items to set
the new world record.
Through the “Can Challenge,” VSU will join college campuses across
the United states in the effort to help fight hunger. Anyone can
participate by donating nonperishable goods or by creating special
artistic structures out of canned food, which will be judged in a
competition. Participants may win prizes, while making a positive
impact on the community. All the cans used to build each structure
will be donated to the Second Harvest of South Georgia’s Valdosta
Foodbank.
“This stop hunger inititiave will allow VSU community members show
off their overwhelming generosity, and their competative spirit,”
Jenna Gilbert, Campus Dining Marketing Manager, said.
Pre-registration is required for the “Can Challenge,” which is one
of several events planned for the university’s weeklong canned food
drive. Donations may also be dropped off at any of VSU’s dining
locations until Nov. 9. For more information, call (229) 333-7146
