VSU Celebrates Internal Auditor Awareness Week

VALDOSTA - Valdosta State University and its campus community have celebrated Internal Auditor Awareness Week, during May 25-31. The topic that hits close to home for an institution that actively utilizes its own department as well as one that offers a certificate program in internal auditing.

Mayor John Fretti declared the week to honor internal auditors following a similar declaration by Governor Sonny Perdue. VSU’s own Department of Internal Audits invites all departments to visit its Web site, www.valdosta.edu/audits/, and take the self-assessment test at www.valdosta.edu/audits/Self-Assessment.shtml .

Students interested in the topic can participate in the Internal Auditing Certificate Program, part of the Harley Langdale Jr. College of Business Administration. Endorsed in fall 2007 by the Institute of Internal Auditors, an internationally recognized organization, the program offers special courses in internal auditing, fraud examination and forensic accounting and its first 10 graduates accepted their certificates in May 2008. Students, who primarily majored in Accounting and Finance, were successful in the program, boasting an average GPA of 3.4.

Mayor Fretti’s proclamation aligns with state level efforts to recognize internal auditors and the purpose of their work. According to its Web site, the IIA is also celebrating International Internal Audit Awareness Month throughout May to promote the profession and showcase the value of services provided.
